## Definition

Photobiomodulation is the use of specific wavelengths of light — typically red and near-infrared — to stimulate cellular energy production and promote healing, collagen synthesis, and inflammation reduction in skin tissue. It is the scientific mechanism behind LED light therapy devices used in both clinical and at-home settings. The process works by activating cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondria, increasing ATP production and triggering beneficial cellular signaling cascades that support skin repair and rejuvenation.
