When sebum and dead skin cells accumulate in a pore and the pore remains open (unlike a whitehead, which is closed), the material at the surface is exposed to air. The melanin in the dead skin cells and the oxidation of the lipids in sebum turn the plug dark. It is a chemical reaction, not contamination. This misunderstanding leads people to over-cleanse, scrub aggressively, or use harsh astringents in an attempt to 'clean out' their pores. This approach backfires badly. Over-cleansing strips the skin's protective barrier, triggers increased oil production, and causes inflammation — all of which make blackheads worse, not better. The most effective treatments for blackheads are salicylic acid (a BHA that dissolves oil inside the pore), retinoids (which regulate skin cell turnover and prevent pore blockages), and niacinamide (which reduces sebum production).
