Milia
Definition
Milia are small, white or yellowish, dome-shaped bumps that appear on the skin when keratin (a protein) becomes trapped beneath the surface in tiny cysts. Unlike acne, milia are not caused by clogged pores or bacteria and are not inflamed or painful. They most commonly appear on the face — around the eyes, cheeks, and nose — but can occur anywhere on the body. Milia can affect people of all ages, including newborns (where they are called neonatal milia and typically resolve on their own). In adults, milia may be caused by skin damage (from sun exposure, burns, or dermabrasion), heavy occlusive skincare products, or they may appear without a clear cause. Unlike acne, milia cannot be 'popped' because they have no pore opening. Treatment options include professional extraction by a dermatologist, topical retinoids to promote cell turnover, and chemical exfoliation with AHAs.
