    Propolis

    PROP-uh-lis

    Definition

Propolis is a natural, resinous substance produced by honeybees from tree buds, sap flows, and other botanical sources. Bees use propolis to seal and protect their hives, and it has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. In skincare, propolis is valued for its potent anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and wound-healing properties. It contains over 300 bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, and vitamins. Propolis has been shown to soothe acne-prone skin, reduce redness and irritation, accelerate wound healing, and protect against environmental damage. It is particularly popular in Korean skincare products and is commonly found in serums, ampoules, toners, and moisturizers. Propolis is generally well-tolerated but can cause allergic reactions in individuals with bee or bee product allergies. Patch testing is recommended before first use.
