Dermatitis

Definition

Dermatitis is a general term for skin inflammation, characterized by redness, swelling, itching, and sometimes blistering or flaking. There are several types, including atopic dermatitis (eczema), contact dermatitis (from irritants or allergens), seborrheic dermatitis (affecting oily areas like the scalp), and stasis dermatitis (related to poor circulation). Each type has different causes and triggers, but all involve an inflammatory response in the skin. Dermatitis is not contagious. Treatment depends on the specific type and severity, but generally includes moisturizing to support the skin barrier, topical anti-inflammatory medications (corticosteroids or calcineurin inhibitors), and identifying and avoiding triggers. Chronic dermatitis may require ongoing management with a dermatologist to prevent flare-ups and maintain skin comfort.
