Elastin
Definition
Elastin is a highly elastic protein found in the dermis that allows the skin to stretch and snap back to its original shape. While collagen provides structural strength and firmness, elastin provides flexibility and resilience. Elastin fibers are produced by fibroblasts primarily during youth — the body's ability to produce new elastin is extremely limited after puberty. Once elastin fibers are damaged or broken down by UV exposure, smoking, pollution, or natural aging, they cannot be effectively replaced, leading to sagging skin, wrinkles, and loss of skin elasticity. This makes sun protection from an early age one of the most important strategies for preserving skin elasticity. While no topical product can truly rebuild elastin, ingredients like retinoids and peptides may help protect existing elastin fibers and support overall skin structure.
