Definition
Fibroblasts are the primary cells in the dermis responsible for producing collagen, elastin, glycosaminoglycans (like hyaluronic acid), and other components of the extracellular matrix that give skin its structure, firmness, and hydration. These cells are essentially the skin's construction workers — they build and maintain the structural framework that supports the epidermis above. As we age, fibroblast activity slows, leading to reduced collagen and elastin production, which contributes to wrinkles, sagging, and thinning skin. Many anti-aging treatments aim to stimulate fibroblast activity. Retinoids, vitamin C, peptides, and growth factors can activate fibroblasts topically. Professional treatments like microneedling, laser resurfacing, and radiofrequency devices create controlled micro-injuries that trigger fibroblasts to produce new collagen during the healing process.
